Bodybuilding History 2001 Up to now

Bodybuilding is the art of showing the physique of the your body. Bodybuilding is the art of increasing body muscles through physical exercises and dieting. A man or woman who is involved in this type of sport is called bodybuilder.

The big name in the history of bodybuilding is Ronnie Coleman. He holds the record for most wins in bodybuilding competitions. He won Mr Olympia contest eight times from 1998-2005. Jay Cutler defeated him in 2006.

Mr Olympia contest getting bigger and bigger every year with the awareness of bodybuilding all over the world. Jay Cutler's was defeated in 2008 and won the title again in the next year 2009 and make a record of only one man in history who won the title again after losing it. At this time, Cutler is the leading bodybuilder of our time and winning the title of Mr Olympia four times last in 2010.

Bodybuilding History 1991-2000

In the 90s, Arnold became the Chairman for the Presidents Council on Fitness. In 1991, eight times Mr. Olympia Lee Haney retired and after him Dorian Yates, winning Olympia from 1992 until his retirement in 1997.

In fact, all professional bodybuilders of this era demonstrated a distinctly different, more extraordinarily defined, physique to that of the 1980s, as tremendous practices prevailed.

The International Federation of Bodybuilding (IFBB) was trying to make bodybuilding an Olympic sport from early 2000. This is did not happen till London Olympic 2012. Olympic recognition for bodybuilding remains controversial since some argue that bodybuilding is not a sport because bodybuilding necessarily involves the use of anabolic steroids, which are illegal in Olympic.

Bodybuilding History 1981-1990

Bodybuilding had become more and more popular sport in all over the world in 80s. Arnold Schwarzenegger retired and would like continue to sponsor the bodybuilding through film industry. Due to his entry in film industry, the already professional stars of film industry started bodybuilding to improve the shape of their physique.

In this era, the existing stars of bodybuilding family become retired and the chance for new champion to come forward. The Chris Dickerson was the champion of the year in 1982. Dickerson has record of becoming the first African-American winner of Mr. America with it also being the oldest winner of Mr. Olympia at the age of 43.

After the Arnold Schwarzenegger the next leading bodybuilder was Lee Haney. He broke Schwarzenegger's record and won eight consecutive Olympia's from 1984-1991. Haney had everything, regularity, proportion, conditioning, and at his heaviest he was a massive 245lbs.

Bodybuilding History 1970-1980

Bodybuilding history in the 1970s, Arnold Schwarzenegger covered his spot as the number one bodybuilder in the world by winning the Olympia continuously from 1970-1974 and win again after five years in 1980.


As increased in the popularity of bodybuilding into the 1970s, Arnold and other big name of bodybuilding superstars such as three-time Mr. Olympia winner Frank Zane, Dave Draper and Mike Mentzer became family names.

Bodybuilding History 1961-1969

Bodybuilding is the art of showing the physique of the physical body. A man or woman who is involved in this type of activity is called bodybuilder.

The first bodybuilding contest across-the-board was held in 1965. The name of the contest was the Mr Olympia. The first champion of this contest was Larry Scott and he won the title again in next year. Sergio Oliva won the Mr. Olympia for the next three years in 1967, 68 and 69.

The 1960s provided world class bodybuilder of all time. Arnold Schwarzenegger is the one of them and is the number one bodybuilder in the world. He beat Dennis Tinereno for the Mr America title in 1967. Arnold won the Mr. Olympia first time in 1970.

Bodybuilding History 1950-1960

Bodybuilding became more and more popular in the 1950s and 1960s. The man behind this popularity was Charles Atlas, whose advertising the bodybuilding by paper media like books and publications. With this advertisement many people comes in bodybuilding. In these days newly title was started by John Grimek and Reg Park with the name of Mr. Universe and Mr. America. The other big source of popularity was the casting of bodybuilders in movies.


The first gym equipment and training supplement industries were founded by Joe Weider and were complemented by the growth of the International Federation of BodyBuilding & Fitness (IFBB), which was co-founded by Joe and his brother Ben.


The IFBB eventually displaced the Amateur Athletic Union's Mr. Universe titles and also that of the National Amateur Bodybuilders Association as the most important and notable contests were formed in 1950.


In 1950, the National Amateur Bodybuilders Association (NABBA) started their NABBA Mr. Universe contest in the UK. NABBA's first Mr. Universe contest was won by Steve Reeves. Top bodybuilders who won the Mr. Universe title include Reg Park, Bill Pearl and Arnold Schwarzenegger.

Bodybuilding History 1931-1949

Bodybuilding era after 1930 are considered to be very good especially from 1940 to 1970 is frequently called as the “Golden Age”. The casting of some bodybuilders in movies increased the popularity of bodybuilding in the world.

Due to the increase in fame of bodybuilding, the Amateur Athletic Union (AAU) added a bodybuilding contest to their existing weightlifting competition in 1939 and the winner of this type of competition was declared as a named "America's Best Built Man".  The overall winner of this 1940 competition was John Grimek.

In 1949, the winner of Mr America contest was Alan Stephan.
